Flat Bay Potash/Salt
The Carboniferous aged strata of the Maritimes Basin is a significant producer of potash and salt. The bulk of the salt production is in the form of rock salt for de-icing purposes. Presently there are three producing mines in Atlantic Canada: Sussex, New Brunswick (potash/salt) - Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan; Pugwash, Nova Scotia (salt) - The Canadian Salt Company Limited; Nappan Salt Mine, Nova Scotia (salt) - Sifto Canada Inc. (evaporation operation).
Vulcan owns the mineral rights (in addition to petroleum rights) over a portion of the northern Bay St. George Basin. In 2002 Vulcan drilled Captain Cook #1 which discovered a 165-meter thick section of evaporites consisting of halite (salt) and a potentially significant potash zone. In 2004 the Company drilled Flat Bay #2 well, which intersected approximately 200 metres of salt approximately 2 km from Captain Cook. Seismic data suggests that these discoveries are connected and that a potentially significant salt/potash resource exists in the area. Assessment of the discoveries is ongoing as well as is the solicitation of partners to advance exploration and assess its economic significance.
